01 / QUESTIONSFAQ

About the game.

How do I play?

Tap a pot to add a drop of that ink to the can, or hold it to pour. Watch the draw-down: the target above, your mix below. You have 30 seconds a color, counted from your first drop. Measure when it looks right: you see the ΔE and what is off, such as too dark or too blue. Then approve it, or correct the mix once and measure again. Five colors, then your average.

How does Play with friends work?

Two to four players share one screen and one can of ink, and each picks a character. Each turn lasts 30 seconds, counted from when the player taps ready. Measure within ΔE 2 and the color is yours; otherwise the next player takes over the same can. The ink already in the can stays in: you can add drops, take back your own drops of the turn, or empty the can and start again. After four turns without a winner, nobody scores the color, and its real formula shows. The first player changes with each color, and whoever wins the most colors wins the game. Each player can then save their points to the ColorMix leaderboard: each color you won counts as in a solo game, up to 20 points.

Can I challenge a friend who is not here?

Yes. At the end of a solo game, Challenge a friend shares a link: your friend mixes the same five colors and sees the score to beat. At the end they can try the same colors again, or challenge you back.

What is the color of the day?

One brand color a day, the same for everyone, with the usual rules: 30 seconds from your first drop, measure, then correct once. You get one try a day. Share your result: it shows your ΔE, your drops and your time, but not the color. Play several days in a row to keep your streak.

What are the badges?

Five feats, saved in this browser: Press-ready (a color at ΔE 1 or less), One shot (a color right at the first measure), Three days (the color of the day three days in a row), Clean kitchen (a color without Undo, minus or Empty) and Steal (land the color a friend missed, in Play with friends). Each badge dresses one agent in its Halloween costume, to pick in Play with friends.

What does Calculate formula do?

ColorLoop starts from the real formula of the color, when there is one, and corrects it drop by drop with the same base inks, as an ink kitchen corrects a formula after measuring. It fills the can with the result and measures. It is the idea of ColorLoop on press: measure, then correct. In the game it is ColorLoop's formula, not yours, so the color then scores 0.

Where do the colors and formulas come from?

Each color is a brand spot color with a published reference (brand guide, trademark filing or court ruling), shown as it prints on coated paper. After each color, the game tells you its real formula: the base inks and, when the formula is published for offset, their percentages.

How is the score computed?

When you measure, your mix is compared with the target with ΔE 2000 (CIEDE2000), the color difference printers measure. A ΔE under 1.8 scores 100%; the score then drops as the difference grows. If you correct the mix, your last measure counts. When time is up, the can is measured as it is; an empty can, or a color solved with Calculate formula, scores 0.

Which inks are in the game?

The fourteen classic base inks of spot color mixing, plus Transparent White: Yellow, Yellow 012, Orange 021, Warm Red, Red 032, Rubine Red, Rhodamine Red, Purple, Violet, Blue 072, Reflex Blue, Process Blue, Green, Black and Transparent White. Their names are the same in ink kitchens all over the world.

How are the inks mixed?

As in ink formulation software: each base ink has its own absorption curve across the visible spectrum, from 400 to 700 nm. A mix adds up the curves by weight and prints as a transparent film on coated paper; what you see is that spectrum in daylight. Base inks are concentrates, so a drop of a strong blue in a can of yellow already turns it green, and Transparent White only makes the ink weaker. Real formulation also uses the exact paper, the ink film thickness and the measured spectra of the ink maker, so it is more precise than this game.

Why is this game on the ColorLoop site?

Every spot color starts in the ink kitchen, and nobody gets it right by eye. Printers measure, correct and measure again. ColorLoop does the same on press, after each measured sheet.

Are all the players on the leaderboard real?

Not all of them. The board also shows a few ColorLoop house players, from easy to strong, so there is always a score to beat while it fills up with players. They come and go from time to time, and their scores are only shown, never saved.
